Certain times of the year can influence our mood based on our experiences and interpretations. For example, Christmas can be a time for joyful family gatherings or feelings of isolation and loneliness.
February, the month of romantic love, or so it’s drilled into us, is another one of those times where we can feel emotionally very high and lovey-dovey or lonely if we’re not in a relationship or don’t feel loved by a partner.
Many people feel unhappy or unlovable because they are looking for love and validation in all the wrong places (can you hear the country song in your head by Johnny Lee?). That is, looking for love by something or someone outside of themselves.
What I’ve found in my work of helping people transform their lives, is lack of self-love typically originates from early childhood relationships with parents, leading to feelings and beliefs of ‘not being good enough’. This belief becomes embedded into our subconscious and drives our daily actions of what we do or don’t do. It shows up as repetitive negative patterns and directly impacts the results we get in our life, without even realizing it.
All love needs to start within, by truly loving yourself, loving and accepting yourself exactly as you are.
A great place to start is to begin having a relationship with yourself. I know that probably sounds odd, but most of us weren’t taught to understand ourselves first, to love ourselves first. To become self-aware. To love ourselves exactly as we are. Instead, we focus only the flaws pointed out to us at an earlier time in life, usually by someone else.
My relationship with myself began when I was nearly 40 years old, after I had a Personal Breakthrough Experience with a seasoned coach. I used to beat myself up that I was clueless for so long, but then I decided to look at this from a new perspective: I’m glad I started when I did, no matter how long it took, because my entire future was and continues to be changed.
So, first find love from within.
When you have this, you will never be without it.
This month’s Breathe to Heal theme is focused on healing and deepening your relationships.
