Why It's Important to Focus on What You Want

In the previous post, we talked about three important components for successful change.

  1. The first is to update your software’s programming /operating system (subconscious) by removing the root cause of negative emotions & thinking, limiting beliefs, and resolving conflicts in values. This is what we do in a Personal Breakthrough Experience.

  2. The second is taking action, this could be changing your behavior (embracing an exercise regime), it could be removing yourself from situations or circumstances (from an abusive relationship) or establishing new boundaries.

  3. The third is focusing on what you want and not what you don’t want. Let's discover why.

You’ve also learned that like a dam, the conscious part of your mind can only take in and process so much information at one time, and as a result it filters information by deleting, distorting and generalizing information based on our values, beliefs, memories, experiences, and so on.

At the base of your brain is the Reticular Activating System (RAS) that acts as a filter and only let’s things through that it thinks is important and what’s important, is what we focus on most.

Think of it like camera lens focusing in on a target and blurring everything else out or like an executive assistant that filters your messages by giving you only those they know are important to you.

Remember the last time you decided to buy a specific car and all of a sudden you saw them everywhere? The cars were always there, however when you put your focus on it, you began to notice them more.

So, when you focus on and say things to yourself like….

I’m not confident…. I can’t lose weight….I’m bad at math…I’m a clutz…

I never have enough money…or….enough hours in a day……

Your reticular activating system will show you things to prove this is true, and then what happens?

The more proof you see, the stronger your belief is that it is in fact true, and the more you believe it’s true, the more you tell yourself it is….it’s a vicious cycle!

So, when you focus on the positives like I AM confident, I AM good with money, and focus on your specific goal and WHAT YOU WANT, your RAS will start to show you things to prove that your new belief is true for you.

This is why focusing on what you want, and not what you don't want, is so important.
